Finding Your “Why”

Welcome back for this edition of MLM Renegade. I’m really excited about this. I’m excited the feedback that I’ve been getting from everybody. It’s been very positive. This month has grown more than December did, and more than a November before that, as far as my downloads go. I’m excited about that because people are resonating with it. People are excited to see our journey, and even people who aren’t in network marketing. I got a good friend of mine who tells me that he listens and enthusiastically. In fact, the other night he actually asked me, “Hey, when’s the next episode coming out?” So for that, I thank you, guys. It helps keep me going. I love that feeling of being able to help people.

Today, I want to talk about finding your why. Simon Sinek wrote a book called Find Your Why, and that was one of the books from last year. It is really important, especially network marketing, to find your why, to understand why it is that you’re doing what you’re doing. It doesn’t matter what company you’re with, what product you sell or service that you sell. Being in network marketing, in general, is hard. It’s difficult. If we don’t have a clear vision of why we’re doing something, it makes it really difficult to want to get up and grind every single day to do it. This is a really important thing to understand. As I was going through the hero’s journey, and the backstory really even before the backstory is this, this reason why: why are you doing something.

I want you to think about something. What’s important to you? What are you willing to die for? What is the hill that you’re going to plant your flag on and defend it to the death? Whenever I think about that, I think about the Iwo Jima Memorial as those Marines are raising the American flag. I think about that and it pulls at my heartstrings. I think about what am I willing to die for? For me, the answer’s really simple. It’s my family first and foremost; above all, it’s my family. I think, well, what about my family? What am I doing? What am I willing to do for my family? And the answer’s, anything; I would and am willing to die for them. I’d much rather live for them. And that’s what being in network marketing and being an entrepreneur gives me: the opportunity to live for them.

I think I’ve told you guys this before, but my very favorite place on Earth. My very favorite time is on a ski hill with my family, with my kids. That is my happy place. That’s what heaven feels like to me. When I go out and I’m able to ski with my kids… Now, skiing with my kids, let’s be honest, it can be a major league pain in the neck. I’m dad, which means I have to be responsible for everybody’s skis, boots, poles, make sure that they have all of their ski gear, they’ve got their helmet and their gloves and their coat, and a neck gator, in case it’s too cold, and all of those things. It’s a daunting task to get the family ready to go skiing. If you guys have kids, you know what I’m talking about. I like to go on vacation. It takes two days of prep to go for a one day vacation. Like it’s just how it is. But the time that I’m there is so precious. It is such a wonderful feeling that I have when I’m there. That is my reason why.

Family’s not going to be the reason for everybody, some people don’t have that focus, and that’s fine. Everybody needs to find that reason why. But let me tell you, here’s the biggest thing. Finding that why is something you hold on to when the days are darkest and when your belief in yourself maybe isn’t quite as strong, your little engine that could is maybe a little smaller than it even should be. If you can spend the time ahead of time to focus on why you were doing something, it will make all the difference.

Here’s another really important idea though. It’s really important not to let your why become your why not. Let me say that again. It’s really important not to let your why become your why not. When I work in my business, it takes some sacrifice and sometimes it takes sacrifice away from my family, where my why is. It’s detracting from that, but as a temporary sacrifice for a very much a long-term goal; that’s why I keep focused on it. Your why might be something entirely different… The point of it is: You need to focus in on it so that you can understand what you’re doing.

Now, I would encourage you, that as a part of your why, to create, what I’ve heard called or has been called, a Definite Purpose Statement. The Definite Purpose Statement gives you a direction and a definitive, declarative statement that tells you: what you’re about, what your dreams are, what your goals are; that is planting your flag. After you’ve created this, go back to it. Read it every single day, morning and night. If you focus on the goals that you’ve said, if you focus on that definitive purpose that you’ve given your life and your business, you will achieve it. It’s backed by fact. You can look at person after person.

The reason that we set goals, the reason that we want to have these goals in front of us, is because it gives us the opportunity to live. It gives us the opportunity to achieve, and what we focus on gets magnified. If we focus on the good things in life, the good things in life magnify; If we focus on the negative things in life, the negative things in life seem to keep coming.

I want you guys to go out, today. This is going to be a little bit shorter episode. I want you to go out and think about, meditate, visualize your reason for being. Visualize the reason that you do things. Because when you can go out and do that, you’re going to be able to reach new heights. So go out, find your why. Plant your flag. Set your destination for what you need to do. If you need some more help on this, I highly encourage Find Your Why, Simon Sinek. You could also probably find some videos on YouTube. Those are an incredible help.

Coming up on one of our next episodes, I’m actually going to talk about some of the mistakes that I made in network marketing in the past and how to help you avoid those. I looked forward to it. We’ll see you guys next time.
